Abstract: Following the end of adjuvant treatment, breast cancer survivors must cope with uncertainty related to the possibility of recurrence and the loss of the ‘safety net’ treatment provides. This study examined breast cancer survivors’ efforts to manage uncertainty by making lifestyle changes, such as improvement in diet and exercise. We further investigated the role of women’s common-sense beliefs about their cancer, as described by Leventhal’s selfregulation theory, in explaining post-treatment changes.

Radiomaker en twentysomething Adam (een magnetiserende vertolking van rijzende ster Joseph Gordon-Levitt) geniet ten volste van het leven. Deze film vertelt het aangrijpende verhaal van vier kinderkankerpatiëntjes. Axelle, Hugo, Kareem en Victor hebben kanker. De film volgt hen 18 maanden lang tijdens hun harde strijd tegen de dodelijke ziekte. Van de diagnose tot de intensieve medische behandeling en de gevolgen die de medicatie met zich meebrengt. Het gevecht van deze kinderkankerpatiëntjes introduceert ons ook in de wereld van de nieuwste medicatie, testgeneesmiddelen die toch blijken te werken en liefdevolle ouders die machteloos de strijd van hun kinderen ondergaan.

Abstract: This paper aims to describe ‘Cognitive Existential Couple Therapy’ (CECT), a novel couples-based intervention for men with early stage prostate cancer (PCa) and their partners, and to report preliminary !ndings from a pilot study that investigated the acceptability and feasibility of the intervention and the measures to be used in a subsequent randomised controlled trial.

Abstract: In the context of increasing prostate cancer survivorship, evidence of unmet supportive care needs and growing economic health-care restraints, this review examined and evaluated best approaches for developing self-management programmes to meet men’s survivorship needs.

Abstract: ‘Fighting spirit’ in early-stage cancer comprises optimism about prognosis, a belief that the disease and/or its effects are controllable, and a determination to cope with the situation using various active coping methods. It is associated with better adjustment. In advanced cancer, the usefulness of this coping style is contentious. This systematic review identified eight studies that investigated these qualities in advanced cancer.

Abstract: The Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) scale was validated on a heterogeneous French sample of 317 cancer patients. Internal consistency was satisfactory for the original subscales (a coefficients=0.62–0.80), except for the Fatalism subscale (a=0.40). The intercorrelations of the subscales and the correlations between the subscales and Anxiety and Depression criteria were congruent with the values reported in the literature. Multidimensional Scaling revealed three positive and three negative subsets of items revealing adjustment to cancer.
