Borstkanker is de meest frequent voorkomende vorm van kanker bij vrouwen. Ongeveer één op twaalf vrouwen krijgt er in haar leven mee te maken. Zowel de ziekte zelf als de behandeling hebben, zowel op korte als op lange termijn, effecten op het seksuele leven van vrouwen en kunnen interfereren met de vruchtbaarheid. Ook voor hun partners is dit een ingrijpend gebeuren.

Guidelines for psychosocial support have been developed, but there are no standard approaches in routine oncology practice to identify patients experiencing social difficulties. We have designed and evaluated a Social Difficulties Inventory (SDI) to identify patients requiring further assessment and, where appropriate, referral to support services. The purpose of this study was to develop a clinically meaningful SDI scoring system with guidance for oncology staff. Out of 189 patients, 183 completed the SDI and were interviewed by a social work researcher who scored the SDI independently.

The years following prostate cancer treatment are characterized by changes in sexual functioning and risk for depressive symptoms. Sexual self-schema (SSS) is a cognitive generalization about sexual aspects of the self that are associated with sexual behavior, affect, and the processing of sexually relevant information. This study tested if men's SSS moderates the impact of sexual morbidity on depressive symptoms.

The International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS) has championed the need for quality care to incorporate attention to the psychosocial concerns of cancer patients. Widespread international endorsement of distress as the ‘6th vital sign’ is a major step towards improving access to psychosocial care and reducing the isolation and stigma experienced by many affected by cancer.
